Macbook Pro (15-inch, 2019) Photo Editing Laptop

The Macbook Pro (15-inch, 2019) is our first pick as a photo editing laptop.

General Configuration & Performance

The Macbook Pro 15-inch is available in two main configurations. The first one comes powered by a 2.6 GHz 6-core 9th generation of Intel Core i7 processor, and 16 GBs of RAM. While the second one comes powered by a 2.3 GHz 8-core 9th generation of Intel Core i9 processor, and 16 GBs of RAM.

The second model that features Intel Core i9 and 16 GBs of RAM has an outstanding performance that fits perfectly your intensive work of photo editing which requires high speed, and multitasking. Also, the first model has a good overall performance and works pretty well while performing multiple photo editing moderate tasks.

Storage

The first model (i7) has 256 GBs SSD storage which is good enough for saving moderate amounts of data files. While the second model (i9) has 512 GBs SSD storage which is more than enough for storing large sized data files and pictures.

Graphics

The Macbook Pro 15 comes featured with a Radeon Pro 555X graphics card with 4 GBs of GDDR5 memory in the first configuration (i7), while the second configuration (i9) comes equipped with the Radeon Pro 560X graphics card with 4 GBs of GDDR5 memory. The highest-end model has Radeon Pro Vega 20 graphics card with 4 GBs of HMB2 memory.

Ports & Touch Bar

One of the most common problems reported about the new Apple Macbooks regardless of their model or type is the lack of ports.

For this laptop, it only has 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports and one audio jack port. Yes that’s it. Which means you might need to buy a USB hub or a dongle.

Concerning the touch bar which will also cost you a fortune for having it in your Macbook and it is Apple’s alternative for not giving their users a full touch screen, I think it is highly overrated and has a confusing mechanism for usage.

It could be useful for finding and inserting emojis and the best part about it is the touch ID sensor.

A lot of users advice that you remove the Siri button from your touch bar to avoid accidental actuation. They also report the problem of having the delete key far away and out of their reach.

Display

The Laptop has a 15.4- inch (diagonal) LED- backlit Retina display with IPS technology and resolution of 2880 x 1800 at 220 pixels per inch.

The 15 inch screen is so bright, colorful, and sharp. It renders colors very well, and even the black colors display is so beautiful and sharply dark. The Retina display also does a great job at rendering the fine details in any picture or video.

The screen had a score of 114% on the sRGB measure and it manages 403 nits of brightness which is pretty good and fits highly your needs as a photo editor.

Keyboard & Touchpad

Apple’s new Macbooks are well known for their keyboard issues after their introduction of the Butterfly Keyboard. But, in this one, Apple claims the addition of a new material that solves these many issues especially the accidental double-clicks and stuck keys issue.

The 6.1 x 3.9 inches touchpad is highly responsive but a lot of people reported that its not so clickable. However, Apple tried to save the situation by allowing the touchpad to accurately track your input for haptic feedback. The touchpad does perform well during your swipes, taps, and gestures.

Design, Dimensions & Battery Life

For the design, this new Macbook has the same old design of all Apple Macbooks but with a more modern touch. Apple cares about having products that are so iconic so they do not revamp their whole designs. The new Macbook is so chic, slim, and aesthetically appealing.

The laptop has a lightweight of 4 pounds and 0.6 thickness which is lighter than other laptops in the market like Dell XPS and HP Spectre x360.

The New Macbook has a battery life of 10 hours and 21 minutes which is fair enough for your working hours.

Heat Management

The laptop stays cool even under pressure. After a 15 minutes of HD video streaming,  it had a temperature of 91 degrees Fahrenheit at the bottom of the laptop, 83 degrees at the touchpad, and 93 degrees on the keyboard.

Audio & Webcam

The Macbook Pro has an amazing audio sound. It is so clear, loud, and just beautiful. It just lacks a utility for managing audio output which is something available in other laptops for customization.

Regarding the webcam, unfortunately the highly expensive laptop did not come with a good webcam at all. It lacked the basic features of focus, and sharpness. However, its color display is good and accurate enough.

Pros: Battery life, great speed and performance, colorful display, powerful sound, and lightweight.

Cons: Highly expensive, no ports, and still has butterfly keyboard.

Macbook Pro (13- Inch, mid 2018) Designer Laptop

Moving on to our second option which is the 13 inch Macbook Pro. If your needs are compatible with having slightly lower laptop performance than the previously mentioned one, and you are ok with having a smaller screen, you might want to get the 13-inch Macbook Pro at even lower cost compared to the 15-inch one.

General Configuration & Performance

The chosen model of the Macbook Pro 13 comes powered by 1.4 GHz (turbo boost up to 3.9 GHz) dual core Intel Core i5 processor, and 8 GBs of RAM. The laptop performs really well under extensive word load with an adequate speed.

Storage

The chosen model comes with 128 SSD storage which is so fast but you might need an upgrade to the 256 SSD for storing larger files and pictures. You can also get an external hard disk drive.

Graphics

The Laptop comes equipped with Intel Iris Plus 645 graphics card which is a mid-range graphics and video-support graphics card, not the most powerful one taking into consideration the expensive price of the laptop. If you really need a more powerful graphics card you can easily connect to an external one through the thunderbolt 3 port.

Ports & Touch Bar

It only comes with 2x thunderbolt 3 ports (type-C) with the support for charing, and one audio jack. Again same problem of the previous Macbook 15. You will need to buy an external hub for connecting your devices which is so impractical and such ports are highly expensive.

The chosen model does not come equipped with a touch bar but you can easily upgrade it and get one with it. Again, the touch bar is not the best functional thing, it is just impressive and comes at a very high cost.

Display

The laptop has a 13.3 inch backlit LED screen with integrated IPS technology, and a resolution of 2560 x 1600 at 227 pixels per inch.

The Laptop manages 500 nits of brightness and has wide color P3 gamut. It has an outstanding brightness and color display which is highly fitting for a photo editor work.

Keyboard & Touchpad

Same problems of Macbook Pro 15 presumes with the 13-inch model when it comes to the keyboard and touchpad. It has the same butterfly design keyboard. The touchpad is highly responsive, performs well overall, but again not that clickable.

Design, Dimensions & Battery Life

Tha Macbook Pro 13 has the same old designs of Macbooks but with a more modern touch and ascetic look. Again, the space grey color is really beautiful and appealing.

Concerning the weight, the Macbook Pro 13 inch is so lightweight of only 3.0 pounds and dimensions of 12 x 8.4 x 0.6 inches .

The battery life of the Macbook Pro 13 is a bit disappointing as it is lower than other competitors of only 8 hours and 44 minutes. However, the laptop has a fast charging option, so it could be a substitution to the short battery life.

Heat Management

The Macbook Pro 13 will not ever make you feel uncomfortable, especially if you are holding it on your lap for long hours. After 15 minutes of HD video streaming, the underneath of the laptop had a temperature of 96 degrees Fahrenheit, the center of the keyboard had a temperature of 91 degrees, and the touchpad stayed cool of only 86 degrees. Moreover, the CPU throttles under extensive pressure to avoid ruining of the internal parts of the laptop.

Audio & Webcam

Again, an impressive audio speakers. The laptop provides a great listening experience of clear and loud voice.

Concerning the webcam, again taking into consideration the high price of the laptop, the webcam is a bit below average. However, it works fine and is sufficient for video chatting as its clear and color adequate.

Upgradeability

Unfortunately, Apple does not leave room for user upgradeability as it attaches the storage and the RAM directly to the board, unlike other laptops that have the CPU soldered to the motherboard. So, you really need to make up your mind from the beginning regarding RAM and storage while doing your purchase. But, of course, you can always connect an external hard-disk through the thunderbolt 3 port.

Pros: Strong performance, fast SSD, good display, and super lightweight.

Cons: Battery Life, no ports, and very expensive.
