Dell XPS 15 7590 great Video Editing Laptop

Our fourth option is the newest model of Dell XPS 15 inch 7590 laptop, considered by much as the best video editing laptop in 2019 hands down.

General Configuration

The chosen XPS features 9th generation of Intel Core i7-9750H with a clock speed up to 4.5 GHz. For an intensive video editing work, this power of CPU does the job perfectly within a good price range.

The chosen model comes with 16 GBs RAM in a dual-stick configuration. 16 GBs RAM is good enough for most video editing software, and it could be upgraded later easily to 32 GBs.

Storage

This model comes fitted with 1 TBs SSD storage which is plenty enough for video editing work and mega size files.

Graphics

Most of the XPS 7950 models comes with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU, which is a good option for video editing but still depends on what you exactly need from a GPU. For example, the GTX 1650 will not match the new RTX Nvidia lineup.

Ports

Dell does not offer other dedicated GPU options, but this can be compensated as the new XPS has a Thunderbolt 3 port with four lanes of PCIes. So, you can connect other external GPU (eGPU) based on your power needs. The thunderbolt 3 port can also be used for increased connectivity by connecting docking station to it.

Other than that, ports are essential for any video editor, for you to be able to move in/out any needed data and files. Speaking of which, the XPS has two USB-A 3.1, HDMI 2.0, Thunderbolt 3 with 4 lanes of PCIes, 3.5 mm audio jack, and an UHS-II SD Card reader.

Display

The display of your video editing laptop is an essential thing and not a plus. Factors such as color reproduction, resolution, and the size of the screen are all critical factors that you really need to consider while preparing for your purchase.

The XPS 15.6 inch screen’s display is really good and comes whether in FHD (1920 x 1080) or 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution. There is also a couple of other options in the display of XPS screen, for example, you can choose between the non-touch screen model or the LCD touch one.

This chosen model comes with a 4K resolution and an LCD touch screen. The touch LCD hits 100% AdobeRGB color reproduction and manages 500 nits brightness. While on the other hand, the non touch screen hits 100% DCI-P3 color reproduction and manages 500 nits brightness. Both options are really good, so depending on your ultimate needs and budget, you can make a good decision.

The screen size (15.6) is not a bad option for your on-the-go work, but if you need to dig deep in details you might need an external screen.

Keyboard & Touchpad

The keyboard of the XPS is known to be fast and comfortable enough for many hours of typing. It has the island-style keyboard with spacious, comfortable keys, and backlit. Its trackpad is also big enough (4.1 x 3.1 inches), fast, and responsive.

Design, Dimensions & Battery Life

The XPS is a very slim laptop that has an overall attractive design. It is made of silver Aluminium and Carbon material that gives it a premium look with the Dell logo centered in the middle.

The laptop has dimensions of 14.1 x 9.3 x 0.7 ~ 0.5 inches and weighs only 4.5 pounds so you can easily carry it around.

Speaking of battery life, the LCD touch screen model lasted for only 8 hours and 7 minutes, while the non-touch model lasted for 8 hours and 48 minutes.

Heat Management

The XPS could get a little toasty sometimes, but it has a good ventilation system (one in front of the hinge and the other at the bottom of the laptop), so it is never uncomfortable to use it or carry it directly on your lap.

Audio & Webcam

The XPS has the bottom-mounted speakers which are good speakers and loud enough to fill a small room with clear sound. They sometimes get shallow depending on the song or the audio played.

Moreover, the XPS has a high quality webcam measuring only 0.9 inches (smallest webcam in all Dell’s laptops). The built in webcam has a great image quality with accurate colors.

Pros: Great 4K display, attractive design, slim, great Webcam, and a good graphics performance.

Cons: Below average battery life.

General Configuration & Performance

The chosen model of this laptop comes fitted with an 8th generation of Intel Core i7, 16 GBs of RAM. This is again a good power of CPU for video editing job. The 16 GBs RAM is good enough for fast multitasking. A fact worth mentioning, the Surface copied 4.97 GBs files in 16 seconds which is 318.1 megabytes per second, so it was fast enough to beat the average record of 263 MBps.

Storage

The Surface Book has 256 GBs of SSD storage which is good enough but might need an upgrade if you have plenty of mega files.

Graphics

The Surface comes with a dedicated Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU. The GTX 1060 is a powerful graphics card that handles heavy editing work and is better than that of the XPS (Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU).

Ports

The Surface has plenty of ports such as: two USB Type-A 3.1, one USB type-C w/ video, Power in/out, USB 3.1 data, Full size SDXC card reader (UHS-II), audio jack (3.5 mm), and two surface connect ports (1 in tablet, 1 in keyboard base). Unfortunately, despite all of these ports, the Surface does not have a Thunderbolt 3 port.

Display

The Microsoft Surface has a 15 inch screen of 3240 x 2160 resolution. The display of this screen is really bright and vivid so it fits perfectly the video editing work that requires high attention to details.

Moreover, the screen covers 131% of the sRGB color gamut, which is an above average (102%) score.

The Microsoft Surface manages 417 nits brightness which is again beaten up by the XPS’s 500 nits brightness.

Keyboard, Touchpad & Stylus

The overall typing experience of the Surface is good despite having a shallow keyboard.

The 4.2 x 2.7 inch touchpad works perfectly in terms of speed and responsiveness.

The Surface also has a responsive stylus for flexibility in usage, especially in drawing or editing, but unfortunately it is sold separately.

Design, Dimensions & Battery Life

The laptop is made of Magnesium in matte grey color with Microsoft logo centered in the middle in a reflective silver color. The Surface does not have a very attractive design such that of the XPS but it still looks fine.

The Surface has dimensions of 13.5 x 9.9 x 0.9 inches and weighs 4.2 pounds which is slightly lighter than the XPS.

This laptop has an outstanding performance in the battery life as it could stay up to 12 hours and 9 minutes. With the XPS staying for only 8 hours, the Surface is way better.

Heat Management

The Microsoft Surface can stay cool while performing simple tasks but after 15 minutes of HD video streaming, it measured 77 degrees Fahrenheit at the center of the keyboard, 76 degrees on the touchpad, and 78 degrees on the bottom of the laptop.

The laptop does not come with any pre-installed audio software. It has an average speakers that could fill a mid-size room with a relative clear sound.

Regarding the webcam, the laptop has a great one with a resolution of 2560 x 1440, it shows almost every detail in the pictures taken.

Pros: Detachable 2 in 1 laptop, good battery life, great display, and a USB type-C

Cons: Pricey, and no Thunderbolt 3 port.

Keyboard, Touchpad & Stylus

The keyboard has good solid keys for a comfortable and fast typing experience. The 4.7 x 2.3 inch touchpad is soft and responsive enough. Moreover, the laptop comes with the HP Active Pen which is generally responsive for rough sketching but when you try shading for example, the display will not pick up the pen. This is due to the low pressure-sensitivity score of the pen, which is only 2048.

Design, Dimensions & Battery Life

The Spectre has an overall cool design. The laptop’s built in Aluminium material comes in a modern dark blue color and the hinges are beautifully cut. Furthermore, the laptop has a fingerprint reader for easier accessibility.
